Authentication

According to the OECD, wristwatches are, by value the most counterfeited product in the world.

Fakes are becoming more sophisticated with even the mechanical movement being copied. Counterfeit boxes and paperwork add to the deception.

Franken-watches are watches built from two or more donor watches with the intent to deceive. This may be to copy a rare and valuable example of the same watch model or even to emulate a completely different brand.

Identifying fakes and franken-watches is a key first step in any valuation process. This is offered as a stand-alone service or as part of a valuation. A foundation course in authentication is offered at the Assay Office Birmingham as part of their 'AnchorCert Academy' Click on the AnchorCert logo to find out more and book for the next course.

Watch Consultant

I have had a lifelong fascination with watches, seeing them as artefacts of social history intrigued by context as much as mechanisms and enjoying the heroic failures along with the enduring successes. When not sourcing or valuing watches, I write on the subject for a variety of print and online publications.
